Origin
In the late 1980s, Sony had little involvement in the video game industry, supplying components for other consoles and operating a video game studio. However, one man had a vision that would change everything. His name was Ken Kutaragi, an executive at Sony who managed one of the company’s hardware engineering divisions, and he would later become known as “The Father of the PlayStation.”
Kutaragi’s journey began as part of a joint project between Nintendo and Sony to create a CD-ROM version of the Super Famicom. However, in 1991, Nintendo broke the partnership and opted to go with Philips instead, leaving Kutaragi with the responsibility of developing the PlayStation project to rival Nintendo. It was a daunting task, but Kutaragi was determined to succeed and reminded Sony President Norio Ohga of the humiliation they suffered from Nintendo.
Despite facing opposition from a majority present at a meeting held in June 1992 and widespread internal opposition from older Sony executives, Kutaragi and his team were able to retain the project by shifting to Sony Music, a completely separate financial entity owned by Sony. The next challenge was deciding whether the console should focus on 2D sprite graphics or 3D polygon graphics. After witnessing the success of Sega’s Virtua Fighter in Japanese arcades, Sony realized that 3D polygon graphics should be the console’s primary focus.
With a clear direction in mind, Kutaragi and his team worked tirelessly to make the PlayStation a reality. The console’s logo, designed by Manabu Sakamoto, captures the 3D support of the console with an optical illusion that suggests the letters in depth of space. Sakamoto also chose four bright principal colors, red, yellow, green, and blue, for the logo, creating a visual identity that has become synonymous with gaming.
Today, the PlayStation is not just a gaming console but a cultural icon that has brought people together from all around the world. It has evolved over the years, from the original PlayStation to the PlayStation 5, and has continued to push the boundaries of gaming technology. Ken Kutaragi’s vision and determination to succeed have left an indelible mark on the world of gaming, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of gamers and innovators.

Creation of Sony Computer Entertainment
It was the dawn of a new era, and Ken Kutaragi was at the forefront of it all. At Sony Music Entertainment, he worked hand in hand with the likes of Shigeo Maruyama and Akira Sato to create something truly revolutionary. And on November 16, 1993, their hard work and dedication finally paid off as they gave birth to Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI).
But SCEI was no ordinary company. They knew that if they were going to succeed, they needed to attract the most talented and creative minds in the industry. That’s why they partnered with Sony Music, using their expertise in manufacturing, marketing, and producing discs to help build their brand. And it worked like a charm.
With Terry Tokunaka and Olaf Olafsson on board, SCEI was poised to take the gaming world by storm. And they did just that with their first official project, the PlayStation. After years of development, Sony executives finally gave the green light in 1993, and it was off to the races.
As the rumors began to spread, gamers and industry insiders alike eagerly awaited the release of the “Sony PS-X.” And when the tech demos were unveiled in a Tokyo hotel in 1994, the excitement reached fever pitch. Developers and publishers flocked to the platform, including major players like Electronic Arts and Namco.
And it wasn’t just the 3D-capable, CD-ROM-based console that caught their attention. It was also the lower price point and ease of manufacturing, making it a far more attractive option than Nintendo’s cartridge-based system. By December 1994, the PlayStation had hit Japanese stores, and it was an instant success, outselling its rival, the Sega Saturn.
The rest, as they say, is history. The PlayStation continued to gain popularity around the world, revolutionizing the gaming industry and cementing Sony’s place as one of the biggest players in the business. And it all started with the hard work and dedication of Ken Kutaragi and his team at SCEI.

PlayStation
Get ready to take a trip down memory lane, because we’re about to talk about the iconic gaming console that revolutionized the world of video games. That’s right, we’re talking about the original PlayStation, which burst onto the scene in Japan on December 3, 1994.
The PlayStation series quickly became a household name, dominating the gaming industry with its cutting-edge technology and impressive graphics. But the original PlayStation was just the beginning of a long and exciting journey.
Over the years, we saw the release of successor consoles and upgrades, including the Net Yaroze, which was a special black PlayStation that allowed gamers to program their own games and applications. Then came the PS one, a smaller and more sleek version of the original that was released on July 7, 2000. And let’s not forget about the PocketStation, a handheld device that enhanced PlayStation games and also acted as a memory card.
All of these devices were part of the fifth generation of video game consoles, going head to head with the likes of the Sega Saturn and the Nintendo 64. But it was the PlayStation that truly stole the show, becoming the first video game console to sell a whopping 120 million units.
The PS one, in particular, was a game-changer. With a completely redesigned, smaller form factor, this console outsold all others, including its own successor, throughout the remainder of the year. And with a new and improved Graphical User Interface, the PS one was truly ahead of its time.

PlayStation 2
In the year 2000, the PlayStation 2 arrived on the scene, blowing away its competitors, the Dreamcast, Xbox, and Nintendo GameCube. This console, a part of the sixth generation of gaming, was a true game-changer, and it remains the most successful console of all time, selling over a whopping 155 million units by December 28, 2012.
But the PS2 was not just successful; it was also incredibly innovative. The console was backward-compatible with most original PlayStation games, and it featured a slimmer redesign that made it even more accessible to gamers worldwide. And just to add another feather to its cap, the PS2 became the fastest game console to reach 100 million units shipped, accomplishing this feat within 5 years and 9 months from its launch.
In 2004, the PlayStation 2 Slimline was introduced, a major redesign of the console that made it smaller, thinner, and quieter. It even had a built-in Ethernet port and modem, making it easier than ever for gamers to connect and play with friends. Sony continued to improve upon the Slimline, releasing revisions that reduced the weight of the console, making it more compact and efficient.
Although PlayStation 2 shipments in Japan ended on December 28, 2012, the console has left an indelible mark on the world of gaming. It has been ranked as the best-selling console of all time, and even though production has ended, studies show that many people still own and cherish their PS2s, long after they’ve stopped using them. So if you’re looking to relive some of the greatest moments in gaming history, the PlayStation 2 is the console to beat.

PlayStation 3
In 2006, the gaming world was forever changed with the arrival of the PlayStation 3 (PS3). A stunning seventh generation console from Sony that shattered all expectations, it went head-to-head with its competitors, the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii, offering players an experience that was nothing short of breathtaking.
Packed with advanced technology and a Blu-ray disc player, the PS3 boasted high-definition resolution, making gaming more immersive than ever before. And let’s not forget about the Sixaxis wireless controller that introduced motion-sensing technology, allowing players to fully immerse themselves in their games.
Initially, the PS3 was offered with either a 20 GB or 60 GB hard drive, but as demand grew, so did its storage capacity. Today, it is available with up to 500 GB of storage, providing gamers with enough space to store all of their favorite games.
In 2009, Sony introduced the sleek and slender PS3 Slim model, which was 33% smaller, 36% lighter, and consumed 34% to 45% less power than its predecessors. It was an instant success, with sales exceeding a million units within just three weeks of its launch.
The redesign also included a cooling system and smaller Cell processor, making it cooler and quieter than ever before. And with support for CEC, the PS3 Slim could be controlled with ease using a remote control.
Not content to rest on their laurels, Sony unveiled the “Super Slim” PS3 in 2012, complete with a new, redesigned case with a sliding door that covered the disc drive. Weighing in at just 4.3 pounds, it was almost three pounds lighter than its predecessor, and came with either 12GB of flash memory or a 250GB or 500GB hard drive.
The PS3 has sold over 80 million consoles worldwide as of November 2013, cementing its place in the annals of gaming history. It will always be remembered as a technological marvel that revolutionized the gaming industry and set a new standard for gaming consoles.

PlayStation 4
The PlayStation 4 (PS4) was a true game-changer in the world of gaming. Back in February of 2013, Sony Computer Entertainment held a press conference where they revealed the hardware specifications of their new console, which they dubbed as the eighth-generation system. Launching in the fourth quarter of 2013, the PS4 introduced the x86 architecture to the PlayStation series, taking gaming to a whole new level.
But that’s not all. Sony wanted to make sure that the PS4 would leave a lasting impression on gamers everywhere. They introduced the PlayStation App, allowing players to turn their smartphones and tablets into a second screen to enhance gameplay. Plus, they debuted the PlayStation Now game streaming service, giving gamers the ability to play games without ever having to leave the house. The company also incorporated a share button on the new controller, allowing players to view in-game content being streamed live from their friends, emphasizing their focus on social gameplay.
And that’s just the beginning! Sony knew they had to keep up with the competition, so they unveiled the PlayStation 4 Slim in 2016. This revision of the original PS4 hardware came with a streamlined form factor that was 40% smaller and carried a rounded body with a matte finish on the top of the console. It even came with a minor update to the DualShock 4 controller, making it even easier to use.
But wait, there’s more! Sony also unveiled the PlayStation 4 Pro, or PS4 Pro for short, on the same day as the Slim. With improved hardware and an upgraded GPU with 4.2 teraflops of processing power, the PS4 Pro was designed primarily to enable selected games to be playable at 4K resolution, giving gamers an even more immersive experience. Plus, all games are backwards and forwards compatible between PS4 and PS4 Pro, but games with optimizations will have improved graphics performance on PS4 Pro.

PlayStation 5
Get ready to be blown away, because the PlayStation 5 (PS5) has arrived and it’s taking the world by storm! Released worldwide on November 12, 2020, the PS5 is part of the ninth generation of video game consoles, alongside the Xbox Series X and Series S, and it’s here to redefine the gaming experience.
The first news of the PS5 came from Mark Cerny in an interview with Wired in April 2019, and since then, Sony has been working hard to make this console the next-generation gaming device of choice. With the aim of shipping worldwide by the end of 2020, Sony’s financial report for the quarter ending March 31, 2019, confirmed that new next-generation hardware was in development and would be shipped no earlier than April 2020.
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg! The current specifications, released in October 2019, show that the PS5 is loaded with incredible features. The console is slated to use an 8-core, 16-thread CPU based on AMD’s Zen 2 microarchitecture, manufactured on the 7 nanometer process node. The graphics processor is a custom variant of AMD’s Navi family using the RDNA microarchitecture, which includes support for hardware acceleration of ray-tracing rendering, enabling real-time ray-traced graphics.
And that’s not all! The PS5 ships with a custom SSD storage that delivers lightning-fast loading times and larger bandwidth to make games more immersive, as well as to support the required content streaming from disc for 8K resolution. Plus, the console’s integrated Blu-ray drive supports 100GB Blu-ray discs and Ultra HD Blu-ray, while the improved suspended gameplay state for the PS5 consumes less energy than the PlayStation 4.
But wait, there’s more! The PS5’s new controller, the DualSense, is a game-changer in itself. With adaptive triggers that can change the resistance to the player as necessary, and strong haptic feedback through voice coil actuators, which together with an improved controller speaker is intended to give better in-game feedback, the controller takes gaming to the next level. USB-C connectivity, together with a higher rated battery, are other improvements to the new controller.
The PlayStation 5 also features a completely revamped user interface that’s both user-friendly and aesthetically pleasing. And the best part? The PS5 is backwards-compatible with most PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR games, with Cerny stating that the transition to the new console is meant to be a soft one. Jim Ryan even mentioned in a later interview that the PlayStation 5 is able to play “99%” of PlayStation 4 games, an estimate derived from a sample size of “thousands”.

Handheld System
PlayStation Portable
Get ready to step into the world of portable gaming with Sony’s PlayStation Portable (PSP)! In the early 2000s, the gaming industry was revolutionized with the introduction of the PSP – Sony’s first-ever handheld console that took on Nintendo’s DS console. Released in December 2004 and March 2005, the PSP-1000 model boasted an all-new proprietary optical storage medium known as the Universal Media Disc (UMD), capable of storing both games and movies. This sleek console featured 32 MB of internal flash memory storage that could be expanded via Memory Stick PRO Duo cards.
But wait, there’s more! Sony didn’t stop there – they introduced the PSP-2000 and PSP-3000 models, the first major hardware revisions of the PSP. These newer models were 33% lighter and 19% slimmer than the original PSP, with a new gloss finish and modified serial ports to accommodate video-out features. They also featured more responsive buttons and USB charging. The PSP-3000 even had a built-in microphone and upgraded screen, making it even more immersive for gamers.
Then came the PSP Go, released in October 2009, which was the biggest redesign yet. With a whopping 16 GB of internal flash memory, the PSP Go didn’t even feature a UMD drive, but it could be extended with a Memory Stick Micro flash card. The screen slid up to reveal the main controls, making it look and feel like a futuristic device. This smaller and lighter PSP had Bluetooth connectivity with the PlayStation 3’s controllers, the Sixaxis and DualShock 3, making it even more versatile.
And last but not least, we have the budget-friendly PSP-E1000 model. This version did not have Wi-Fi or stereo speakers, but instead had a single mono speaker and a matte “charcoal black” finish, similar to the slim PlayStation 3. This model was released in 2011 and was available across the PAL region for an RRP of €99.99.

PlayStation Vita
First released in Japan in December 2011 and North America in February 2012, the Vita was previously known as the Next Generation Portable, or NGP. Sony officially revealed this powerful device on January 27, 2011, at the PlayStation Meeting 2011.
The Vita boasted impressive specs including a 5-inch OLED touchscreen, two analog sticks, Sixaxis motion sensing, and a 4-core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore processor. This gaming beast was perfect for on-the-go gaming.
But Sony wasn’t satisfied with the original Vita, and in September 2013, they unveiled the new PCH-2000 series system. This sleek and stylish handheld console was 20% thinner and 15% lighter than its predecessor. It also featured an LCD screen instead of OLED, an additional hour of battery life, and 1GB of internal storage memory.
The PCH-2000 series Vita came in six gorgeous colors: white, black, pink, yellow, blue, and olive green. It was released in Japan on October 10, 2013, and in North America on May 6, 2014. Gamers were ecstatic to get their hands on this updated model and experience the next level of portable gaming.
But all good things must come to an end, and the Vita was discontinued in March 2019. Despite its undeniable success, Sony decided to shift its focus away from portable consoles. SIE president Jim Ryan acknowledged the Vita’s greatness but announced that they had moved on from the business of handheld gaming. Nonetheless, the Vita remains a beloved console by gamers worldwide, a true testament to its powerful capabilities and impressive design.

Controllers
Take a trip back in time to 1994, when the original PlayStation was released with a brand new controller – the PlayStation control pad! This innovative device featured a D-pad and four main select buttons – Green Triangle, Red Circle, Blue Cross, and Pink Square, along with start and select buttons. But Sony didn’t stop there – in 1996, they released the PlayStation Analog Joystick, perfect for those high-flying flight simulation games.
But it wasn’t until 1997 that Sony truly outdid themselves with the Dual Analog controller, which added two analog sticks based on the same potentiometer technology as the Analog Joystick. The Dual Analog didn’t last long though, as it was replaced by the iconic DualShock controller in 1998. The DualShock was a game-changer, adding not just two analog sticks, but also introducing vibration feedback that allowed gamers to feel the action in their hands.
The DualShock was so popular that it became the longest running series of controllers for the PlayStation brand. The series includes four controllers – the DualShock, DualShock 2, DualShock 3, and DualShock 4. The DualShock 4 even went through a massive redesign and is the default input for the PlayStation 4. But Sony didn’t stop there – they also released the PlayStation Move, a motion-sensing game controller platform for the PlayStation 3 that used the PlayStation Eye webcam to track its movements.
With the PlayStation Move, Sony treated it like a major “platform launch” and planned an aggressive marketing campaign to support it. From starter kits with a PS Eye and a Move motion controller, to bundles of a Move motion controller with select games, Sony truly revolutionized the gaming industry with their innovative controllers. So whether you’re a fan of the original PlayStation control pad or you prefer the latest DualShock 4, Sony has a controller for every kind of gamer.
