Introduction
The Guardians of the Galaxy are a fictional superhero team appearing in comic books published by Marvel Comics. Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning formed the team from existing and previously unrelated characters created by a variety of writers and artists, with an initial roster of Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Phyla-Vell, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, and Adam Warlock.
These Guardians first appeared in Annihilation: Conquest #6 (April 2008). A feature film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe based on this team was released in 2014. A sequel, titled Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, was released in 2017, and the team has also been featured in the crossover films Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Thor: Love and Thunder, the Disney+ The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (both 2022) and the upcoming film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023). This Guardians team is the second to operate under the name, following the original team created by Arnold Drake, Roy Thomas and Stan Lee in 1969.

Biography
The Guardians are a team of superheroes in the Marvel Comics universe, created by writer Dan Abnett and artist Andy Lanning in 2008. The original lineup consisted of Star-Lord (Peter Quill), Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot. The team’s mission is to protect the galaxy from threats and to keep peace.
Star-Lord is a human from Earth who was abducted as a child and raised among the stars. He is a skilled space pilot and tactician.
Gamora is a former assassin and the last of her species. She is a skilled fighter and strategist.
Drax the Destroyer is a humanoid warrior whose family was killed by the villain Thanos. He possesses great strength and is driven by a desire for revenge.
Rocket Raccoon is a genetically engineered raccoon who is an expert in weapons and technology.
Groot is a sentient tree with the ability to manipulate his own form and communicate with only the phrase “I am Groot.”
The team has faced many threats and challenges, and the lineup has changed over time. The Guardians are considered outlaws by some, but they are respected by many as heroes who will do whatever it takes to protect the galaxy.
Film & Reception
The Guardians have received generally positive reviews from critics and audiences alike.
The first film was released by Marvel Studios in 2014, directed by James Gunn. The film stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill / Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket Raccoon, and Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot.
The film received positive reviews, who praised its humor, cast, and soundtrack. Guardians of the Galaxy was a financial success, grossing over $773 million worldwide, and received several awards and nominations, including a nomination for Best Visual Effects at the 87th Academy Awards.
A sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, was released in 2017, and was also well-received, grossing over $863 million worldwide. A third film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, is releasing in 2023. The success of the first two films has cemented the Guardians of the Galaxy as a popular and beloved part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
